Dr Amy Gaglia Essletzbichler

I am a psychotherapist with a core profession of social work and a PhD in psychology. I have over 20 years of experience.

I often work with people who are experiencing difficulties that are related to managing or experiencing their emotions. My goal is to help people to live value driven lives with fulfilling connections to themselves and others.

THERAPY - Caring for you

It is not uncommon for people to have difficulty with emotions.  Often we have learned that there is something wrong with the emotions we have or we struggle to regulate them and not act on them in unhelpful ways.

These difficulties can be a result of early learning and trauma and can result in the problems like depression, anxiety, C-PTSD, BPD, substance misuse issues or eating disorders which may impact daily functioning.

I work from a DBT perspective which combines teaching practical skills and addressing the problems you are experiencing. In this approach we emphasise new learning as well as self-acceptance and compassion.

I also incorporate Affect Phobia principles and seek to help clients have freedom from suffering and movement toward their life worth living through embracing their emotional experiences.

QUALIFICATIONS & ACCREDITATION

I have an MSW from Hunter College CUNY in New York City (2003) and  PhD in Psychology from Bangor University (2023).

I am on the Social Work England Register and am an Accredited DBT Supervisor with SfDBT in the UK and Ireland

EXPERIENCE

I worked in the NHS from 2003-2016 as a DBT Therapist.  In addition, to working as DBT therapist, I also practiced lots of CBT and worked a lot with trauma, OCD, and BDD.  I have also had a private practice since 2013.

I have been supervising people in DBT practice since 2010.  I also work as trainer of DBT with biDBT.

One thing to be clear on when you’re choosing a psychologist, is that therapists are humans too. This means no one therapist will feel ‘right’ for everyone. I want you to know that that even if we aren’t a helpful match, there will be a therapist out there for you, so please hold hope that you can be supported in the way you need.
